Step 3: Categories

Categories group the item catalog so visitors can find what they want to store. A visitor opens a category such as “Living room”, picks items from it, and watches them stack in the 3D unit.

The first time you open this step, the builder creates one category for every group in the Calcumate item catalog and fills it with the matching items. These carry a default badge. You do not have to do anything to get a complete, working set of categories.

Default categories can be renamed, reordered, given a new icon, have their items changed, and be switched off. They cannot be deleted. Use the toggle on the card instead to hide a default category from visitors while keeping it in your configuration.

Click the plus button in the top right to create your own category. Custom categories carry a custom badge and can be deleted with the bin icon on the card.

Field Notes
Category name Required, up to 20 characters. A counter shows the characters used.
Label colours Text colour and background colour for the category label visitors see. Hex values such as #3B82F6.
Assign items to your category Search the catalog and click items to select them. A tick marks selected items. At least one item is required.

Click the tick in the top right, or Save Category at the bottom, to save. The cross closes without saving.

The same form opens when you click the pencil on an existing category.

Two toggles at the top of the step affect every category.

  • Display search function? On by default. Shows a search box inside the calculator so visitors can find items by name without browsing categories.
  • Add custom items? On by default. Lets visitors add their own items when something they want to store is not in the catalog.
  • Reorder. Drag the handle on the left of a card. The order here is the order visitors see.
  • Change the icon. Click the icon on a card to open the icon picker. Search by name, click an icon and press Save. If an icon image cannot be displayed, a generic placeholder is shown instead.
  • Enable or disable. The toggle on a default category hides it from visitors when off.
  • Item count. Each card shows how many items it contains.

The circular arrow button at the top right compares your default categories with the current Calcumate item catalog. It adds any catalog groups you do not have yet and removes default categories whose group no longer exists in the catalog. Custom categories are never changed by a re-sync. A confirmation dialog appears first.

New catalog groups are also added automatically each time you open this step, so you rarely need the button. It is disabled while the catalog is loading or when it cannot be reached.

Press Next to save the categories and their settings and move to Presets.
